We're looking for a BC Young Fishermen's Network Coordinator!
Job Status: One year contract position with possiblity for renewal
Location: Vancouver, Victoria, or elsewhere in Coastal British Columbia
Reports to: Executive Director
Salary: Negotiable ~ $48,000/yr
Hours: 32 hours/week
Start Date: December 2022
Organization Background
The BC Young Fishermen’s Network (BCYFN) is hosted by the TBuck Suzuki Foundation, which works to ensure a future with thriving coastal communities, healthy marine ecosystems, and abundant sustainable fisheries. The BCYFN is a group that supports the development of the next generation of B.C.'s fishing fleet. We’re all about creating connections; linking young fishermen to the people and resources they need to plan successful business and engage in their communities.
Our core functions are:
- Education and support - provide skill building opportunities, and access to industry experts, support resources, news, events and opportunities across the coast.
- Community building- provide a shared space to connect young fish harvesters with each other,mentors, consumers, local businesses, industry organizations, business advisors, and more.
- Representation- highlight the rich culture and history of BC’s fishing industry, communicate the value of fish and what this could mean for coastal communities, and create a profile for the BC Young Fishermen fleet.
Position Description
The BCYFN Coordinator will work towards the Foundation’s goal of strengthening community connection to fisheries and building coastal community wellbeing. This includes growing young coastal leadership, fostering ecosystem based management, promoting sustainable seafood systems, and supporting projects that foster wellbeing. The BCYFN Coordinator will work with the T.Buck staff, a volunteer steering committee of fish harvesters, program funders, and partner organizations to deliver appropriate programming. The BCYFN Coordinator is responsible for coordinating BCYFN events including the Annual Gathering.
Responsibilities

Coordinating the BC Young Fishermen’s Network including:
- Developing community and skill building programming;
- Organizing an annual BC Young Fishermen’s Gathering;
- Managing digital communications- newsletter, Facebook, Instagram, website;
- Securing and maintaining project funding;
- Developing and maintaining strong relationships with partner organizations and stakeholders;
- Creating and maintaining databases.

In addition this role will include a secondary focus on supporting other initiatives that align with the TBuck Suzuki Foundation goals.
- Participating in and leading initiatives that support domestic and values-based seafood systems including workshops and events
- Participating in research initiatives around coastal community wellbeing
- Coordinating the annual T.Buck Suzuki Legacy Bursary including outreach, review process, and communication with applicants
- Some support with other TBuck Suzuki Foundation programs including OceanSmart, marine planning and sustainable fisheries initiatives
- Representing the Foundation and communicating program goals to the public at various community and industry events
- Participating in organizational activities including developing individual work plans and Objectives and Key Results, staff reporting and other processes
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong knowledge of fisheries and coastal British Columbia
- Detail oriented with strong organizational skills
- Self-starter with the ability to manage and prioritize competing assignments while working remotely
- Strategic thinker who brings creativity and flexibility into work
- Strong relationship builder with excellent interpersonal skills
- Excellent oral and written communications including report writing, editing, and presentations
- Computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite and Google Drive
- Desire to support and promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and mindfulness throughout our entire organization and in work with communities.
Experience
- Experience in project, program, or event management an asset
- Experience in fundraising or budget management an asset
- Experience with event planning is an asset
- Experience managing a group of volunteers is an asset
- Experience in social media management, non-profit communications, or marketing an asset
- Understanding of community economic development, enhancing coastal economic opportunities, improving social conditions in a sustainable manner
- Preference to those with experience working with or in Indigenous communities, marine industries, and coastal communities in B.C.
